National Diploma in ECD – course structure
Structure, Times and Teaching Practicals
The programme is offered over 3 years part-time, during which the 240 credits of the qualification are covered. In addition to the contact hours (see below) a considerable amount of self-study is required.
The programme structure is modular, and students have to complete all study units successfully in order to obtain the final qualification. Assessment criteria have been formulated for all units, and include 80% attendance, completion of all assignments and reaching minimum pass marks. Examinations take place three times per year, as part of the assessment of some of the study units.
Course Times
- Mondays & Wednesdays, on average 9 weeks per term
- 18h00 - 19h30 artistic sessions
- 19h50 - 21h30 content module
- Plus 3 or 4 Saturdays per term
- 09h00 - 13h00 crafts & book study
Teaching Practials
Teaching practicals (approximately ten weeks) are included in the programme. There is a progression from observing to assisting and finally conducting specific sections of the pre-school day.
Students are expected to make arrangements that will ensure their availability for doing the practicals required at the various stages of the training. Every attempt will be made to arrange timing and venues of practicals in a manner convenient for the students, but students with commitments during the day will need to make themselves available for up to 3 weeks at a time (6 weeks in the last year of study).
