Helen Stotko, Managing Director

Helen began her career as an Occupational Therapist. Skills and practical experience learnt in this field enabled her to enter qualitative market research. Her interest and enjoyment prompted her to study Marketing through the Institute of Marketing Management. Research work opened the doors to many valuable experiences socially, politically and practically, both nationally and internationally. Interacting through group discussions and individual interviews with people in South Africa awakened her interest in Civil Society. Stepping into the Centre for Creative Education in 1995 was therefore a natural progression. Helen then became a part-time student of the Centre by studying for the Diploma in Kindergarten. Her love of young children fuels her passion to bring a different kind of education that values the richness of the human being.

Willem van der Velden, Academic Head

Willem van der Velden qualified with a BA in Waldorf Education in 1988, after which he taught for 5 years at primary level. He then took on the training of teachers, first in the Gambia (West-Africa) and from 1996 in Cape Town. In 1999 he graduated with an MA in Education through Oxford Brookes University, after a comparative research of the Waldorf curriculum and the then newly introduced Curriculum 2005. He was a project manager for the first seven years of the Zenzeleni School in Khayelitsha. Since 2001, he has been the Centre's Academic Head.
