At the Centre for Creative Education early childhood development (ECD) workers develop healthy lifestyles and celebrate the fruits of their labour through regular gardening activities. Once every week or two during the growing season six or eight women come together to pursue ongoing ECD training, and learn from one another. After meeting together inside, they head outside to plant and eventually harvest the fruit of their labour. Integrated exercise of head, heart and hands is emphasized as the means for productive and fulfilling activity.

Our story

Isiseko Sobuntu, meaning "Foundation of Humanity" in Xhosa language, began in 1997 with the graduation of a class of women from the Centre for Creative Education's Early Childhood Development training programme. The intention has been that these women, trained with Waldorf-inspired methods, are continuing to upgrade their skills and to send additional staff from their respective centres for training. These eight women, and the educare centres they manage, are spread throughout Cape Town townships. Approximately 500 children and their families are nurtured through this work.
